Peter Cotton Tail – New Hand Knit Finger Puppets!

When I was a child, for Easter, my father would send us on Easter Egg Clue Hunts.  This wasn’t the normal Easter Egg Hunt.  Instead, my brothers and I  would each start with one plastic egg on the kitchen table filled with a clue as to where to find the next egg and clue.  There would be several eggs (sometimes with a tiny present or piece of candy) that would lead to the Easter Basket at the end.  It was a fun game, and my father loved to try and trick us with the clues.

These little finger puppet bunnies remind me of this time of year and Easter Basket gifts.  So adorable!

Here’s the little bunnies on a journey:

A Truly Green Soap

Marius Fabre Marseille SoapsI’ll be honest. I used to buy this soap just for the look of it. So simple and old fashioned. Turns out it hasn’t changed in a hundred and ten years!! The Marius Fabre Company developed this soap mainly for washing clothing and household cleaning. I now use it for that and so much more. It is vegetable based so there are no synthetic additives like petroleum. Not only it is gentle on fine fabrics like silk and cashmere, it is a lifesaver on my dry winter skin. I even use it on my dog that is prone to allergies. Its cube shape makes it last up to twice as long as ordinary soap. It also works as a moth repellent in my sweater drawers. Beautiful, utilitarian, and environmentally friendly.

Simpler the Better

Happy 2011 ! With every new year comes the opportunity to make a change. Followed by the usual disappointment of not keeping it up. So I have decided to do something I actually enjoy doing but do it more often. And that is cooking. I usually see something on TV or in a magazine that looks good then spend time locating ingredients, preparing the house for guests to come over, and making the dish itself. Then lets not forget the clean up. That’s probably why I don’t do it very often! So my resolution is the simpler the better! Like these roasted organic* golden beets. Easy to make, can be served in many ways, and easy to clean up! *(I prefer to buy organic when I can but certainly don’t hesitate if you can’t get organic.) Enjoy !

Recipe for Organic Roasted Golden Beets

  •  6-8  organic golden beets ( try to buy similar sizes) can use red if you can’t find golden
  •  Olive Oil
  •  Kosher or Sea Salt
  •  Freshly cracked black pepper
  •  2   sprigs fresh thyme

Preheat oven to 425. Take two pieces of tin foil ( approx. 20″x20″) Lay them on top of another to make double layer. Cut the green stems/leaves off beet and any root left on bottom. Place beets in a bowl. Drizzle with olive oil ( enough to lightly coat all beets) sprinkle with salt and fresh pepper. Massage all together and place on top of tin foil. Gather all four corners of tin foil to center and seal. Close off any openings in tin foil. Place tin foil “package” in middle of oven and roast for 45-60 mins. depending on size of beets. When done open tin foil slowly as steam will come out. Sharp knife should go through easily. Sprinkle with fresh thyme leaves.
With the organic beets I leave the skin on but the skin can be removed easily once they have cooled enough to be handled.

 Ideas for Serving
Slice or quarter and eat alone with a little drizzle of fresh lemon juice. Add to a salad of spinach or arugula, Stilton blue cheese or goat cheese and toasted pecans. Great as a side dish to grilled chicken, pork or beef.

I served mine in the Tinplated Copper Bowl now available in our shop.  Click here to check it out.
